Some of it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s good advice, some of it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s awful.\u00c2\u00a0 What I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m noticing, though, is a dearth of information on how to <em>approach<\/em> writing a book.\u00c2\u00a0 This unsung step is crucial to the development of any novel. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s where ideas are nurtured and shaped. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s where worlds are born and characters are birthed. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s where inspiration and intuition conspire to parent dreams.*<\/p>\n<p>Here, then, is my contribution to this seldom discussed piece of craft.<\/p>\n<p>HOW TO APPROACH WRITING A YA NOVEL**<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Get an idea (check the Sunday paper, sometimes Target has a sale).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brianfarreybooks.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/calvin-writing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-85\" title=\"calvin-writing\" src=\"https:\/\/brianfarreybooks.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/calvin-writing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Make sure it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a really good idea. Ask your cat. If she sleeps, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a really good idea.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Research the YA market and learn that someone else did your idea.\u00c2\u00a0 Sort of like how you planned, only better.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Buy a live chicken, some salt, and a ceremonial dagger.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 In a field near a graveyard at midnight, draw a pentagram with the salt and sacrifice the chicken.<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Curse the name of the author who stole your idea. Said curse might include, but should not be limited to, poxes, bodily leakage, poor judgment, spontaneous combustion, spontaneous tap dancing, unrelenting sorrow and porridge, intermittent gravitas, and mistaken identity.<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Google the author to see if the curse worked.<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 If the curse did not work, repeat with step 1.<\/p>\n<p>9.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 If the curse worked, supply me with a list of ideas you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d like me to stay away from and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll do so unreservedly thank you very much and my you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re looking nice today unholy one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*=Yes, I&#8221;m aware of how completely awful that metaphor is. I&#8217;m giving it to you as a gift. Consider it a weapon the next time someone criticizes your writing. \u00c2\u00a0Whip that puppy on them and watch their brains implode. You can thank me later. Or now.<\/p>\n<p>**=Please note that while the term &#8220;YA novel&#8221; is used, these methods can be invoked as you approach writing just about anything.
