You may recall that I gloated with fervor as I handed the title of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Miss Candor Sends Her Regrets\u00e2\u20ac\u009d to Andrew Smith so he could write a short story around it. You may recall a victory jig (well, maybe not, as I did it when no one was around; rest assured, there was a jig).<\/p>\n<p>This year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Derby? Didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t work out as well for me.<\/p>\n<p>I came in last. Well, last in our group of four. Not dead last, thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster. <a href=\"https:\/\/brianfarreybooks.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/dawson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-196\" title=\"dawson\" src=\"https:\/\/brianfarreybooks.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/dawson-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAlthough my horse was uncomfortably close to that ignominious spot.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not alone. Catherine lost. Kimberly lost. Andrew won (both our bet and the race; his horse actually came in first, something I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t even come close to with last year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s victory).\u00c2\u00a0 And now, as I do the Walk of Shame to my laptop, I must write a short story using a title provided by Catherine, whose horse came in ahead of mine: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153All of Nature Abhors a Vacuum.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>It will <em>not<\/em> be a roman a clef using my cat as a protagonist.<\/p>\n<p>I got off lucky. Last year, Catherine gave Kimberly the somewhat problematic title, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Uncle Mo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Gastrointestinal Tract.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 Maybe Catherine regretted that, so she went easy on me. (If she didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t regret it then, she must be regretting it now that Kimberly has given her the title, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Uncle Mo Holds a Grudge.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Why do I have the feeling that, if this Bet continues to be a regular thing, Uncle Mo will be making a perennial appearance\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6)<\/p>\n<p>We have a deadline of June 1 to do our stories, whereupon the three losers will post their stories (Kimberly will be using Andrew\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s supplied title, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Flat Tire Man\u00e2\u20ac\u009d) on our respective blogs for all to see.<\/p>\n<p>(Pssst. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t tell my fellow writers but I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m done with my story. I couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t sleep Saturday night, I got an idea, and I ran with it. But don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t spread it around. I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want them to be jealous or anything. Besides, who knows, I may decide I hate it between now and June 1.)<\/p>\n<p>So, stay tuned in a month for an original short story titled \u00e2\u20ac\u0153All of Nature Abhors a Vacuum.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (You know, the one that&#8217;s already done. &#8216;Cause that&#8217;s how I roll.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How quickly the mighty have fallen.
